KM Obaid dead

Veteran politician and BNP standing committee member KM Obaidur Rahman died at Apollo Hospitals in the city yesterday morning. He was 68.Family sources said Obaid fell sick as he had chronic diabetes and blood pressure. His blood sugar level suddenly dropped yesterday morning. He was rushed to the Apollo Hospital where the on-duty physicians declared him dead at about 11.35 am soon after the admission.A former minister, an organizer of the War of Liberation and a member of the recently dissolved parliament, Obaidur Rahman had been suffering from chronic diabetes, high blood pressure and other complications, family sources said.He left behind his wife Prof Shaheda Obaid and only daughter Shyama Obaid, a host of relatives, political comrades and admirers to mourn his death. His wife Shaheda Obaid was the former chairman of Dhaka Education Board.The body of Obaidur Rahman was later brought at his residence at Banani from the hospital.The first namaj-e-janaza of Obaidur Rahman was held at Banani Chairmanbari ground last afternoon, followed by second namaj-e-janaza at the south plaza of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.Speaker Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, Liberal Democratic Party president Prof AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury, Workers Party president Rashed Khan Menon, senior leaders of BNP including Saifur Rahman, former ministers, former MPs, leaders of different political parties, among others, took part in the janaza.The third namaj-e-janaza of Obaidur Rahman was held in front of the BNP central office at Nayapaltan. BNP standing committee members, other central leaders, and a large number of leaders and activists of the party and its front organizations attended the namaj-e-janaza.After the janaza at Nayapaltan, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia placed wreath on the coffin of late leader on behalf of the party. She also wrapped the coffin of Obaidur Rahman with the party flag.The body of Obaidur Rahman was scheduled to be taken to his village home after another namaj-e-janaza in front of Baitul Mukarram Mosque last night. According to the last wishes of Obaidur Rahman, he will be buried beside his mother’s grave at their family graveyard at village Lashkardia in Nagarkanda upazila of Faridpur district. Before, two namaj-e-janaza will be held at Rajendra College ground in Faridpur town and at Nagarkanda upazila.Obaid was born on May 5, 1940. He was an elected Member of Parliament from Faridpur-2 constituency as many as four times.Meanwhile, BNP advisory council member and former minister Harunar Rashid Khan Monno yesterday condoled the death of KM Obaidur Rahman.In a condolence message, he expressed deep shock at the death of Obaidur Rahman and prayed for peace of the departed soul.He also conveyed deep sympathy to the members of the bereaved family.
